Mohammed:

Mother dropped me off at school today. As I exited the car, I turned to say goodbye, but she already began to drive off to work. I turned around and walked down the entryway to the school. The school is a large white building with no windows. I’d like it if the sunlight would come in sometimes. But they would never allow it. The adults check us in, and we make our way to our classroom. My teacher, Mrs. Joyce begins the class with the national anthem, and they play the video of Mayor Daisy Wood and how she saved us Torontonians from the solar flare. She realized that a solar flare would happen in the next few years and tried to warn the entire world. Only Toronto took her seriously and started the process of creating the dome that saved us all. Only those that donated to the cause and believed the mayor were able to live in the dome when it was done. The solar flare started, and people got sick. Then everyone who laughed at the mayor and said she was crazy, now we’re at the dome's door trying to get in, begging her to let them in. But this place is meant for special people like us.

After the video, Mrs. Joyce tells us about graduation. Soon we will turn 4 and we will be given the chips that the mayor created that will let us be the perfect human and play our part in the dome. I dream of the day I get my chip and start my job. I hope to be a farmer and plant all the food that the dome will eat. I’ll be the most important person in the dome making sure everyone has corn, spinach, and my personal favourite, broccoli!
Once we get our chips, we begin to learn our ABC’s, I'm excited for this, all the older kids can read and write, and I want to be like them.

As we play with our blocks in our classroom, I can see a group of men and women watching us from the window. They’re about my mother and fathers age and when they look at me, they point and talk to one another. Are they talking about me? None of my classmates seem to notice but I feel weird seeing them constantly staring at me. Why are they here?
After school, mother waits in her car for me. Mrs. Joyce waves goodbye and I wave back at her. She’s so much nicer than mother. I run to the car and before I can put my seat belt on, mother drives us back home.

Dear Diary,

As the mayor of this city, it is my responsibility to ensure there is control and unity in our precious city of Toronto. This world is built with the sole purpose to ensure everything is in order. That the streets stay clean. People have a task to complete at all times. Children are learning how to contribute to the society that they are born into, and adults are kept in line to ensure they appreciate the privilege they have to be contributing to our society. I did not work as hard as I did to let any of my efforts go to waste, and I will ensure only the elitists of the world remain to cleanse the godforsaken society that’s out…there. The ‘Unknown’—a place that makes me shudder every time I think about the people that do not deserve a position here in Toronto. This morning seems to go off to a great start. I was able to enjoy my breakfast early in the morning, at 7 am, and get an update on how everyone is functioning here in Toronto. The children are learning exceptionally well, the teenagers are preparing for the workplace, and the adults are doing their part in contributing to society efficiently. I do think that we have come so far in society, that I believe we have reached what the ideal world is supposed to be. Everyone has an equal opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and life skills, live under a roof, eat nutritious food, and get a fulfilling job. There is no such thing as being ‘poor’ in our world because I have strived to ensure there is complete unity within The Dome. That means there is no hostility against one another because one is richer than the other; thus, creating a world where crime rates are nearly non-existent here. Everyone owns the same car and is put on similar diets according to their ages, and they all have a common goal: to fulfil their duty as functioning members of The Dome. I believe I have accomplished the aspect of equality, and this world should be considered a role model for other societies out there. We all want peace and unity, and for our citizens to gain equal access to knowledge and opportunities. And The Dome, my beloved world that I have created for those who are worthy of living in, is the perfect example of what a world with those aspirations looks like. This world can be seen as a ‘start-over’ for humanity. Getting rid of the unwanted cases of homelessness, the poor, the sick, the criminals—things that tarnish the world—and allowing solely those who are willing to contribute to the greater good for the people and government. Although, not everyone is aware of who they are working for in The Dome. They are too oblivious and stuck in their bubble of happiness and richness to question the microchips being implanted in their brains or what they’re doing in this world. But that’s alright—that secret stays here in this diary. Anyways, that’s all for today! I must go to do my daily check-ins with the people of this world and ensure everything is up to order. Until next time.
