November, 2072

Dear Diary,

As the mayor of this city, it is my responsibility to ensure there is control and unity in our precious city of Toronto. This world is built with the sole purpose to ensure everything is in order. That the streets stay clean. People have a task to complete at all times. Children are learning how to contribute to the society that they are born into, and adults are kept in line to ensure they appreciate the privilege they have to be contributing to our society. I did not work as hard as I did to let any of my efforts go to waste, and I will ensure only the elitists of the world remain to cleanse the godforsaken society that’s out…there. The ‘Unknown’—a place that makes me shudder every time I think about the people that do not deserve a position here in Toronto. This morning seems to go off to a great start. I was able to enjoy my breakfast early in the morning, at 7 am, and get an update on how everyone is functioning here in Toronto. The children are learning exceptionally well, the teenagers are preparing for the workplace, and the adults are doing their part in contributing to society efficiently. I do think that we have come so far in society, that I believe we have reached what the ideal world is supposed to be. Everyone has an equal opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and life skills, live under a roof, eat nutritious food, and get a fulfilling job. There is no such thing as being ‘poor’ in our world because I have strived to ensure there is complete unity within The Dome. That means there is no hostility against one another because one is richer than the other; thus, creating a world where crime rates are nearly non-existent here. Everyone owns the same car and is put on similar diets according to their ages, and they all have a common goal: to fulfil their duty as functioning members of The Dome. I believe I have accomplished the aspect of equality, and this world should be considered a role model for other societies out there. We all want peace and unity, and for our citizens to gain equal access to knowledge and opportunities. And The Dome, my beloved world that I have created for those who are worthy of living in, is the perfect example of what a world with those aspirations looks like. This world can be seen as a ‘start-over’ for humanity. Getting rid of the unwanted cases of homelessness, the poor, the sick, the criminals—things that tarnish the world—and allowing solely those who are willing to contribute to the greater good for the people and government. Although, not everyone is aware of who they are working for in The Dome. They are too oblivious and stuck in their bubble of happiness and richness to question the microchips being implanted in their brains or what they’re doing in this world. But that’s alright—that secret stays here in this diary. Anyways, that’s all for today! I must go to do my daily check-ins with the people of this world and ensure everything is up to order. Until next time.
I just woke up. The year is 2072. I am just about to wake up at 6:45 am to get ready for school. School starts at 8:30 am and we live just a street away, but for some reason, my mother insists that I wake up extra early to eat breakfast before school. I sat down at the table and my mom cooked me the same meal she cooks me every day, pancakes. I put tons of maple syrup and chocolate chips but my mother gets angry because she says I have too much sugar. I personally think I don’t have enough! Dad is at the table drinking his morning coffee, having his eggs and avocado, and getting ready to work. My dad is a doctor and the best doctor in this dome, even though I may be biased. Mom stays at home to cook and clean our house, and she makes the best dinners in the world! Today is an exciting day at school because we are learning about the history of the dome. My mom loves when I come home from school and tell her all about what we learned because she doesn’t remember how it was when she was young, I'm not sure why. I just turned 17 so this is going to be my final year of school and then I get to start working. I think I want to be a lawyer. My mom says I'm good at arguing at home, so I may as well put my skills to good use. Since I got my license last year, my mom doesn’t have to drive me to school anymore. I get to drive me and my little sister, Lily, to school everyday in my Tesla. Dinner tonight is going to be delicious, that’s all I can think about in class. Mom is making steak with potatoes and green beans, my favourite. When I get home from school on most days, I hang out with my neighbours, Justin and Caleb. They're both in my class and our moms are friends so we always see each other. We always study together for our upcoming tests at school and sometimes we play video games. My mom only lets me play 1 hour of video games a day because she says too much will fry my brain. I don’t believe that for a second but we are learning manners in school so I'm really trying to be on my best behaviour at home. I go to bed at around 10:00 pm every night, so that I am well rested for the new day tomorrow. That’s all for today, until tomorrow!

Dear Diary,

I just woke up, and today is September 24th, 2072. The alarm goes off at 7am every day. At 7:10am, the broadcasting system goes off and I get to listen to any/all news updates while drinking my morning cup of coffee with my husband. My husband is such a hard worker, he is a surgeon at the hospital. We got married 5 years ago and have two children now, but we are still in the honeymoon phase. I make sure to make breakfast for my husband and children before they leave for school and work. Breakfast consists of eggs and an avocado for my husband and pancakes for my children. We are lucky, our house is walking distance from the children’s elementary school, so I walk with my children to school every morning. My daughter, Lily, just entered age 6 and my son, Connor, entered age 8. They both love school, Lily is already so compassionate and loving for her age. I am always so fascinated when they tell me the history of the dome. I entered the dome when I was 17 years old, so I did not have many years of schooling here. I do not have many memories before I was 17 which I always thought was odd, but I never would talk to my husband about it because I do not want to upset him. After I drop my children off at school, I go back home to make my husband his lunch before work. He loves his Nutella sandwiches for lunch. My husband leaves for work at 8:30am. Once my husband leaves, I start my household duties. I start with the beds, then move onto cleaning the washroom, living room, and end off cleaning the kitchen. One of my biggest responsibilities is making sure the fridge is always stocked with my husband and children’s favourite foods. I take inventory and let the Mayor know what items I am running low on. A delivery man drops off the food within an hour of my request. I usually finish my duties by around noon and meet up with some other mothers. My two best friends are Rose and Maria, both their husbands are doctors too. All our husbands are not allowed to discuss their workday with us, but we do not mind, we find it boring anyways. Most days, the three of us will meet to go to the gym. The Mayor puts health and fitness as a top priority in the dome, and I agree with her. I usually get home around 2pm to pick up my children from school and make dinner. I get my children to start on their homework while I start making dinner. Tonight, I made dinner pizza, it’s the children’s favourite. Since my husband is a doctor, he usually comes home late, however today he did not have any microchip appointments, so he got home around 6:30pm. He loves my cooking, all women got the skill of cooking at 20 years old, however, all the mothers say my cooking is the best. Not going to argue with them on that hahaha. While I cleaned up dinner, my husband and children watched a bit of tv before the children’s bedtime. Tonight, Maria invited my husband and I to their house for drinks. Once I put our children to bed, we went over. They are our next-door neighbours, so we walked over. The Mayor placed cameras in everyone’s houses so we would be alerted if the children woke up for any reason. Many people find there to be no privacy in the dome; however, I think it keeps everyone safe. We stayed at Maria’s for only a few hours and then headed to bed ourselves as Tom has a busy day at work tomorrow. Goodnight diary, see you tomorrow!!

Dear Journal,
Today has been a tiring and long day. Work was hectic today, I don’t know why the children were all so hyper. Maybe it was because they all got new microchips inserted a week ago. This usually happens as they get excited, testing all the new skills and knowledge they receive. Chloe made me my favourite breakfast today, waffles topped with whip cream fresh strawberries and Nutella. We woke up early enough and had breakfast as a family, all of us; Chole, Maddy and Anthony. We talked about the kid’s birthday plans next week, they turn 12 on Wednesday. We are thinking of having a soccer themed party at our home, the kids favourite sport. The broadcasting was playing in the background as we listened to the news for the day. Before I left for work, I promised them the party would happen. As I quickly grabbed my wallet, keys and school bag, Chole kissed me goodbye as she handed me my lunch bag. I jumped in my white tesla and peacefully drove to work. When I got to school, the daily routine began. I greeted my fellow teaching collogues and set up the classroom. BOOONNGGGG! The school bell rang and the students began to loudly shuffle the hallways to their classrooms. I always have my students line up outside the door, as our study unit has been proper manners. My class must quietly wait outside the classroom in single file, shake my hand and look into my eyes saying “good morning.” They quietly make a circle in the classroom and wait for everyone to be seated. The Mayor speaks the morning announcements as I take attendance. If anyone interrupt, they are immediately kicked out to be scolded by their parents. I speak the lesson of the day as the class soaks in the information. Word of the day “generous.” I spoke about generosity and how important it is to show this trait in everyday life. We must show kindness and be selfless in our life. The next 2 weeks my class will document the ways in which they show generosity, in any form they wish…a song, a poem, a story, a piece of art. Lina then comes in with lunch as they remain in the circle and quietly eat lunch. At recess, they play in the field, making up fun games with one another. In the afternoon, they attend the respective class that corresponds to their microchip as they perfect the knowledge and skill related to their age. Finally, its 3:30pm! The children run out the doors to their mothers picking them up. I finally lock up my classroom and leave for the day. I am greeted by Chole and the kids when I make it home. The house smells of a delicious aroma. Chole truly is the best cook. As dinner is cooking, I relax on the couch and watch the news. Dinner is finally ready; broccoli soup, potatoes, bean salad and cinnamon buns for dessert. So amazing, I am so full now. We get ready for bed and all gather as a family by the fireplace. Movie night, one of my favourite things to do as a family. As the movie ends, we all dose off and go to bed. Thank you for another great day in the dome!

Goodnight journal – Marc!
