Overnight, the once idyllic and peaceful university campus became wrought with strife as student protests broke out and escalated into full blown warfare as Dr. Van der Wood's brainwashed students began to attack professors, their peers, and miscellaneous staff members. This was followed by a remarkable increase in standardized test scores as students were able to absorb and retain information far more efficiently than they were previously capable of achieving. Neurovance however has no effects on creativity, so these improvements heavily favoured performance in standardized testing, where the average performance of Canadian students on these tests surpassed those of any other country in the world, though this improvement was not necessarily reflected in the performance of Canadians in a dynamic workplace setting.

Neurovance is widely considered a miracle-drug within Canada for its unparalleled ability to temporarily boost memory and learning while under its influence and also presenting no side effects, purportedly. Neurovance has been approved for use in children, adults, the elderly and pregnant women due to its unrivalled level of safety. In the past few years Neurovance has been considered by some to be the new equivalent to coffee as a drug that is so widely used and accepted on a societal level that it is almost impossible to cease its use, as so many Canadians are now dependant on its performance enhancing properties in order to function on a daily basis.

===Alleged Side Effects of Neurovance Usage===
Neurovance has only been approved for human consumption for 4 years since it's invention in 2095, so it's long-term effects have not yet been fully studied. Nofrills has steadfastly maintained it's stance that Neurovance is the world's only medication with absolutely no side effects, but in recent years reports have begun to emerge of adverse health outcomes connected to long-term exposure to Neurovance. Reports of alleged permanent reduction in cognition and academic performance after cessation of Neurovance has been reported by some frequent heavy users, as well as a concerning rise in reports of psychosis, mood disorders and mental instability in some users, though the Nofrills corporation has been quick to label these reports as unfounded or as targeted attempts at defamation. Despite the recent reports of adverse mental effects of Neurovance use, the Canadian Ministry of Health has continued to support the absolute safety of this medication, and has not shown any signs that it is considering changing its policies of the distribution of this medication to any and all Canadians participating in any level of education in the country.

Some Canadians are showing signs of worry, however, as these serious reports are already beginning to emerge about Neurovance after just four years of being available to the public. Some believe that now that its use has become so widespread and the frequency of use chronic, the coming years will see a huge rise in adverse effects related to Neurovance that could, due to the large contingent of the population that uses it regularly, create a public health crisis in Canada related to mental health complications among those in the Canadian educational system due to this drug. Many concerned citizens believe that Canadian society will be unprepared should such catastrophic events occur. Most see no issue and continue to encourage its usage across the country.

Rumours supported by members of the Canadian government and authorities have begun to circulate that these events were not caused by dissatisfaction with Canadian society, but that foreign actors are the ones responsible for supporting and inciting unrest as a way to destabilize Canada. Fingers are being pointed at Bolivia as the perpetrators, especially as tensions between Canada and Bolivia have risen to never before seen heights since 2082 due to recent clashes between Bolivian and Canadian forces over conflicting colonial interests in South America. Since the middle of the 21st century, both Canada and Bolivia have undergone military operations within the area formerly known as Brazil to establish military bases and resource extraction colonies within the area. Both Canada and Bolivia have undergone extreme changes in their foreign policy as well as geopolitical positions in recent decades, and this has put the two countries at odds on the South American continent. Canadian politicians have stated off-the-record that they believe that Bolivia is attempting to create domestic crises within Canada in order to redirect Canadian interest away from the South American continent, though none of these statements have been substantiated by any real evidence. The rise of extremist movements that lack any real coherence to any one ideology or system of values and that instead propose empty, vague promises to restore a country to its former glory have been a cause for concern among many world governments, and it is unclear whether it is foreign actors instigating the rise in these groups, or that countries are simply using this worldwide phenomenon to find excuses for the civil unrest within their own countries.

Since the rise in prevalence of the Glendonites within Ontario, the Canadian government has been uncharacteristically permissive of discussion of foreign interference contributing to these events, and it is still unclear whether or not these claims are true. However, it can be said that Bolivia has much to gain from these periods of social instability within Canada, though there is still much debate about whether these events in Canada were directly influenced by the Bolivian government, or they are simply the geopolitical benefactors of Canada's lack of maintenance of social cohesion and wellbeing within its own borders. To my patients, colleagues, and the wider public,

I want to take a moment to address the situation that’s come to light regarding the brain-enhancing drug, Neurovance.

First and foremost, I’m sorry. Truly. It was never my intention to harm or deceive anyone. My life’s work has been about helping people, and it’s devastating to know I may have betrayed that trust.

I’m sorry to anyone who trusted me, who believed in my integrity as a neurologist, and who thought I stood for the betterment of humanity. I’m also sorry to the scientific community, which I have undoubtedly tarnished with my choices. This apology is long overdue, and I regret not speaking out sooner.

When I first got involved with Neurovance and its company, I believed in its potential to revolutionize mental health and cognitive performance. At the time, I was naive. The people behind the initiative were persuasive and persistent, using my vulnerabilities—my passion for advancing human cognition, my desire to make breakthroughs in neuropharmacology, and, yes, my ego—to draw me in. I conducted my research, submitted my findings, and genuinely thought I was contributing to a brighter future. They said this was about changing lives, about giving humanity a fighting chance against its limitations. I was assured it would remain ethical, regulated, and above all, optional. I truly believed that we were pioneers on the cutting edge of human potential. Or at least that’s the story I told myself.

But somewhere along the way, I made choices that compromised my integrity.

The truth? I didn’t fight hard enough. I didn’t ask the tough questions. I didn’t look deeply into the consequences.

I see now how wrong I was. I betrayed the very principles I vowed to uphold when I became a neurologist.

To those suffering from NeuroGenix’s unintended side effects, to the families who watched their loved ones spiral into dependency, to the professionals who were edged out for refusing to conform—I see you. Your pain, your frustration, your distrust of the medical community? It’s valid. And it’s on me.

To those who trusted me: I failed you. I know an apology can’t undo the harm, but I am committed to making amends.

I don’t expect forgiveness, but I hope my actions moving forward will reflect genuine accountability.

At this point, I know words are not enough. I can’t undo the damage. I can’t take back the years I spent advocating for something I now know was harmful. But I can, and will, take responsibility.

From here on out, I am committed to doing the following:

1. Transparency: I will fully cooperate with all investigations into the NeuroGenix program. No more excuses, no more half-truths.
2. Restitution: I am dedicating a significant portion of my resources to funding programs that help those affected by NeuroGenix dependency and side effects. This includes both medical treatments and mental health support.
3. Advocacy: I will work tirelessly to reform the systems that allowed this to happen in the first place. We need stricter oversight on drug development, marketing practices, and the ethical frameworks governing medical innovation.
4. Education: I will spend the rest of my career educating future neurologists about the dangers of compromising ethics for innovation.
I don’t expect forgiveness. I don’t expect understanding. Honestly, I don’t deserve either. But I hope my actions going forward can at least begin to make amends for the harm I’ve caused.

Finally! Since the market crash of 2094 it has been so hard to get a job, I have been struggling for so long but I finally got my lucky break! Just got hired as a custodian at the University of Toronto, and I just finished my second week on the job. I know that my haters will make fun of me for cleaning up after a bunch of kids, but from here I have nowhere to go but up!. If I keep at this job for a few years and really save every penny, I could maybe get one of those new 60-year mortgages and finally start my own family after all this time, I know that a lot of you reading these posts are in the same boat as me, but maybe things are starting to change!

One thing that really bothers me about my job though, apart from my annoying boss, are the students.I know that Neurovance makes all of these kids a whole lot smarter than me, but the way they act just give me the creeps. I see them staring off into space sometimes, or reading their books and screens like it's the most important thing in the world. I feel like I am working in a building full of animatronics that are just waiting to switch on and do something crazy, I am sure I will get used to it eventually though, I guess that working with studious maniacs is better than working with regular maniacs, at least.

==March 1st, 2099==

Hey everyone, just checking in after another few weeks on the job. My boss is really giving me a hard time, but that's pretty normal I guess. Working at the university is a really good opportunity for me though, so I will put up with it. Maybe if I buy him some donuts or something he will stop breathing down my neck. I get along really well with my coworkers, the boys that I work with are all really nice. I even made friends with one of the faculty, some politics professor named Dr. Van der Wood, but I just call him Erwin. He is a nice enough guy, pretty quiet and reserved, but we always find some time to chat about the weather and the news. He is a little naive for a professor though, he has some really strong opinions on our government and wants things to be back like how they were 75 years ago. For what reason I don't know, it isn't like he is old enough to remember those times, and I doubt that they were as good as he imagines them to be in his head. Honestly he should just keep these stupid ideas to himself, you never know who is listening in on your conversations, wrongthink carries serious consequences these days. Sometimes I get a weird feeling about him, like he is hiding something, but honestly all of the students and faculty act so strangely in this place that it might just be my paranoia, after all they are the smart ones, not me. Still though, him and his students give me the creeps, even if he is nice to me I think it would be best to just stick to my role and not get too close to the professors or students here, they are just a different class than I am. I know my place, and it's not with them. I will give you guys an update in the coming weeks, especially if I hear any juicy gossip on campus.

==March 16th, 2099==

Guys, I don't even know what to say about today, but I think I just witnessed a revolution on campus. I knew that there was something wrong with Professor Van der Wood. Something crazy happened in his class, and all of his students just went insane, rioting on campus and setting fires, attacking people and breaking things. I didn't know what to do so I just ran away and went home, I didn't want to wait around to see what the police would do, but those students might not be alive by the end of the day. By the time I left, the whole campus was a warzone, I would be surprised if no one died, it was madness there, and I guess now I am out of a job. There goes my dreams of buying an apartment, I will have to find another job, and Lord knows how hard that is to do these days. I think that I am still in shock, I am lucky that I got out of there before one of Van der Wood's crazy students got a hold of me, I don't know what got into them, they were all running around yelling about making Canada great again or something? They should learn their place before the authorities do something bad to them or their families, but it's a little late for that I suppose, considering they just destroyed the biggest university in the country. I wonder if this had anything to do with all of the Neurovance that those kids are taking, I can't imagine that those drugs are any help for your sanity, and those kids were taking it every day like candy. Today was a very, very bad day.

==March 21st, 2099==

I think that this is going to be my last blog post, I am pretty sure that the police are removing my internet privileges indefinitely. I was really hoping that I wouldn't get roped into this whole thing, but those kids did a lot more than riot at the university, they are turning into a whole extremist group, they call themselves Glendonites. After the attacks on campus I have been following the news, and they spread out all over Ontario and they are trying to destroy society and rebuild it like the old days, whatever that means. The news said that professor Van der Wood brainwashed them to be his footsoldiers in some type of revolution to go back to the old days, I always thought he was weird but he didn't strike me as a real terrorist.

Since all of this happened, the police have been investigating me because of our friendship, and now they are following me, digging through my whole life and trying to silence me to keep the news of Van der Wood and the Glendonites under wraps, I guess to maintain order while they hunt these students down. They caught Van der Wood, but his students are causing so much trouble that the government is turning the whole country into a police state while they hunt them down. I just hope that the police don't get the wrong idea about me and lock me up, I didn't even like Van der Wood but I don't think they believed me when I told them. That damned professor ruined my shot at a new life for myself, and these Glendonites are definitely not helping. I just want things to go back to the way they were before this whole mess started.

This is the last piece of paper I have in this journal.

I bought it in 2024, when I was fourteen years old. I think I was trying to bullet journal like I had seen some lifestyle influencer do back in the day. Now, I use it to document the world around me as it bursts into flames. Paper has been outlawed, the logging industry is dead. We must only use Canada chromatic as a document writing program, it’s heavily monitored by the government. I don’t trust it. Call me a flat-earther, or a conspiracy theorist, but something isn’t right, I can feel that it isn’t.

It is a shame what the world has turned into. Each day I watch the news with nothing short of horror and dread filling me. Often, I think of what the world could have become if things were different in my youth. When I started high school, they banned smartphones in schools <ref> Raveendran, R. (2024, August 29). Ontario’s ban on cellphones in class is coming and the province says it will help enforce it | CBC news. CBCnews. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/cellphone-ban-jill-dunlop-1.7308073 </ref>. My high school banned backpacks too, and then they prohibited us from using laptops in the classroom, claiming we had to go back to the basics to up our literacy skills. The OSSLT became handwritten again, my parents wouldn’t buy me a laptop since I didn’t need one for school and once I got to university, I couldn’t afford to buy my own.

I know there was a problem, we were all addicted to our smartphones but I can’t help but wonder if removing electronics completely was the right choice. Sometimes, I think it was the wrong one. Trump was elected as the United States 47th president that same year which brought forth a wave of conservatism we had never seen before<ref> The New York Times. (2024, November 5). Presidential election results. The New York Times. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/11/05/us/elections/results-president.html </ref>. Ford was elected for a third term too. All of it … All of it seemed like the perfect recipe for totalitarian tyranny.

Now, internet usage was restricted based on education level and which sector you worked in. Those working for the government had the most access while I, and everyone else who barely managed to graduate high school couldn’t even watch a video on Youtube without hooking up a VPN. Though, they rarely ever worked unless you created and coded the VPN yourself.

Everyday when I send my grandchildren to school I fear for them, for their safety, and for what that god damn drug might be doing to their young minds. Neurovance was only in development for a few months before prescriptions were being handed out like candy on Halloween. And, everyone just accepted it. How ironic. When I was child, everyone threw fits about vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic, not that I remember much of those days. I only have hazy memories from elementary school and much of them come from what my parents told me as I grew older.

Now they swallowed stimulants like breath mints and barely batted a lash when the government called university students terrorists. It’s brainwashing them! They’re numb to the world around them. Walking around like zombies starved for knowledge but it is never satiated! I don’t leave my house much these days because of them. My skin crawls at the sight of them. I feel so guilty, but I can’t help it. They scare me. I want this to end.

It feels like I’m watching one of those bad dystopian YA movies from 2014 but instead of being able to hit pause and turn the television off, I just have to keep watching and pray to God that my family stays safe. It was a miracle that my niece, Mirabelle was home sick the day riots broke out at the university. She told me some of her classmates were injured, one of them, one who was a student of Dr. Van der Wood, disappeared never to be seen again. His parents put up missing posters and alerted the police but those who attended those lectures were all labelled fugitives, at least until they were deprogrammed. They fear he’s a part of the Glendonites.

There were whispers though, that many didn’t want to be deprogrammed. CP24 claimed there were growing colonies of terrorists who agreed with Dr. Van der Wood, quietly planning something. That there is more than just those university kids to be worried about. This fear mongering was ridiculous. If they had all this information, why would they dilly dally instead of taking action. It’s because they know nothing! They just want us to be scared because we’ll be easier to manipulate.

Maybe if the schools had us reading Margaret Atwood instead of Shakespeare for four years, the world wouldn’t be the way it is now. We kept looking towards the past without learning anything from it. Now we’re here, living in the world that was but a nightmare over a hundred years ago. It’s a nightmare now, but there’s nothing I nor anyone else could do to stop it. Those college kids, the Glendonites, they put something in motion that cannot be stopped. I just hope it is for the best.

Anything would be better than this.

It scares me… that drug, those poor children. I’ve tried convincing my kids to homeschool their children but apparently CAS would take them away. I can hardly look at them, they sit twitching and writhing at the dinner table, chittering nonsense. They’re only in kindergarten!

Crap … I’ve run out of space.

I guess this is it.

I hope my grandchildren’s future is far better than their present.

Walking around like zombies starved for knowledge but it is never satiated! I don’t leave my house much these days because of them. My skin crawls at the sight of them. I feel so guilty, but I can’t help it. They scare me. I want this to end.

It was a miracle that my niece, Mirabelle was home sick the day riots broke out at the university. She told me some of her classmates were injured, one of them, one who was a student of Dr. Van der Wood, disappeared never to be seen again. His parents put up missing posters and alerted the police but those who attended those lectures were all labelled fugitives, at least until they were deprogrammed. They fear he’s a part of the Glendonites.

There were whispers though, that many didn’t want to be deprogrammed. CP24 claimed there were growing colonies of terrorists who agreed with Dr. Van der Wood, quietly planning something. That there is more than just those university kids to be worried about. This fear mongering was ridiculous. If they had all this information, why would they dilly dally instead of taking action. It’s because they know nothing! They just want us to be scared because we’ll be easier to manipulate.

Maybe if the schools had us reading Margaret Atwood instead of Shakespeare for four years, the world wouldn’t be the way it is now. We kept looking towards the past without learning anything from it. Now we’re here, living in the world that was but a nightmare over a hundred years ago. It’s a nightmare now, but there’s nothing I nor anyone else could do to stop it. Those college kids, the Glendonites, they put something in motion that cannot be stopped. I just hope it is for the best.

For the entirety of the fall semester, the now disgraced Dr. Van der Wood took advantage of students who per government mandate arrived to each class having taken their dose of Neurovance, the attention maximizing drug, in order to create an army of mindless rebels to destroy this historic institution. Neurovance, which was developed by graduate students of the university was created to extend one's attention spans after decades of citizens slowly losing their ability to focus due to increased smartphone usage. Having initially been approved for students to use as a stimulant similar to typical ADHD medication, the provincial and federal government eventually mandated usage of Neurovance for all citizens of Canada currently in the education system, from kindergarten to post secondary.

With anti-government, anti-capitalist, fascist ideals now unwillingly implanted in the minds of over a thousand students across the three sections Dr. Van der Wood taught, terrorist propaganda began to spread amongst the student population. Overnight, the once idyllic and peaceful university campus became wrought with strife as student protests broke out and escalated into full blown warfare as Dr. Van der Wood's brainwashed students began to attack professors, their peers, and miscellaneous staff members. This attack ended with the death of thirty and the destruction of the historic Gerstein Science Information Centre. These brainwashed militant students then formed into a loosely-organised extremist group under the name Glendonites, who continue to operate as Canadian authorities attempt to seek out and neutralize the group's cells scattered throughout Toronto and increasingly throughtout Ontario as a whole

Testimony and investigation into the matter revealed that the majority of the perpetrators attended Dr. Van der Wood's lectures. Upon inspection of his home and personal devices, a hard drive and several handwritten journals were discovered which extensively detailed his plans for his students. Dr. Van der Wood's plans included inciting a riot at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, overthrowing the idea of academia as a systemic institution, and destroying the Neurovance industry. According to his notes, Dr. Van der Wood sought to restore Canadian society to what he claims is their prime before the province-wide ban of cellphones in school, in Ontario in the 2024 academic year. Allegedly, he is in possession of a handful of relics from the 1990s to the mid 2010s which were passed down to him from his grandfather. These relics and a deep disdain for the usage of Neurovance are what spurred his plan into action, fuelling him to pursue a masters and doctorate for the sole intent of brainwashing students so that they too "woke up" as he did.

Dr. Van der Wood is currently being held without bail while he ungoes advanced interrogation in the 51st Division at 51 Parliament Street, Toronto, Ontario. A trial date has not been set yet as evidence continues to be collected and witness statements are taken. At this time, the University of Toronto and police are working together to ensure all of Dr. Van der Wood's victims are treated to ensure a peaceful and safe community once again.
