Mother dropped me off at school today. As I exited the car, I turned to say goodbye, but she already began to drive off to work. I turned around and walked down the entryway to the school. The school is a large white building with no windows. I’d like it if the sunlight would come in sometimes. But they would never allow it. The adults check us in, and we make our way to our classroom. My teacher, Mrs. Joyce begins the class with the national anthem, and they play the video of Mayor Daisy Wood and how she saved us Torontonians from the solar flare. She realized that a solar flare would happen in the next few years and tried to warn the entire world. Only Toronto took her seriously and started the process of creating the dome that saved us all. Only those that donated to the cause and believed the mayor were able to live in the dome when it was done. The solar flare started, and people got sick. Then everyone who laughed at the mayor and said she was crazy, now we’re at the dome's door trying to get in, begging her to let them in. But this place is meant for special people like us.

After the video, Mrs. Joyce tells us about graduation. Soon we will turn 4 and we will be given the chips that the mayor created that will let us be the perfect human and play our part in the dome. I dream of the day I get my chip and start my job. I hope to be a farmer and plant all the food that the dome will eat. I’ll be the most important person in the dome making sure everyone has corn, spinach, and my personal favourite, broccoli! Once we get our chips, we begin to learn our ABC’s, I'm excited for this, all the older kids can read and write, and I want to be like them.

As we play with our blocks in our classroom, I can see a group of men and women watching us from the window. They’re about my mother and fathers age and when they look at me, they point and talk to one another. Are they talking about me? None of my classmates seem to notice but I feel weird seeing them constantly staring at me. Why are they here? After school, mother waits in her car for me. Mrs. Joyce waves goodbye and I wave back at her. She’s so much nicer than mother. I run to the car and before I can put my seat belt on, mother drives us back home.
